FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 : How Salim caused nightmare to Dominican Republic

Troublesome striker ...Salim Fago Lawal in action for the Flying Eagles against Dominican Republic in Groud D opener of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 , which Nigeria won 2-1 on Sunday evening

Flying Eagles started their campaign for glory at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina with a 2 -1 victory over Dominician Republic to the delight of football loving Nigerians on Sunday evening.

Salim Fago Lawal clearly stood out in the starting line up of the Flying Eagles as he led the attack in the game. The Mavlon FC striker was a major stubbing block against the defenders of Dominician Republic.

His troublesome presence in the box against the defence of Dominician Republic was a tonic the team needed to bounce back after trailing behind in the 23rd minute courtsey of the penalty goal scored by Edison Azcona.

At 18 years old, Salim is fully built like your ideal striker in modern football, with his energetic performance, skillfully endowed with shots at both feet and aeriel prowess.

It was his strong aerial process off a corner kick that resulted in the equaliser that Nigeria scored, he committed the defender to head the ball into the net as an own goal in the 31st minute of the encounter.

Certainly, his dominant presence and his ability to receive the ball offensively from the midfielders were all good signs of what to expect from the striker in subsequent games of the Flying Eagles.

Although he was substituted in the second half when Emmanuel Umeh came in, it was very glaring that Ladan Bosso may have found a sublime striker in Salim and will surely get better leading the attack of the Flying Eagles.

It is hoped that the Flying Eagles arrow head in the attack will continue to trouble opponents’ defence as football pundits, fans and stakeholders look forward to the game against Italy on Wednesday.
