Nigeria dump Dominican Republic in 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup opener

Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, have won their opening game of the Argentina 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup but had to do it the hard way as they came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over the Dominican Republic.

National U20 team of Nigeria, the Flying Eagles began their campaign for honours at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Argentina with a 2-1 victory over Dominican Republic, reports www.totorinews.com.

The game was played at the Estadio Malvinas Argentinas in Mendoza, saw the Flying Eagles trailing behind in the 23rd minute after Edison Azcona converted from a spot kick due to the decision of VAR, which adjudged that Benjamin Fredrick committed a foul inside the box.

Dominican Republic are debutants at the FIFA U20 World Cup and it was a dream start for them, but their joy was short lived when the Flying Eagles leveled up the scores courtesy of an own goal from Guillermo Rosario eight minutes later.

Their woes were further compounded when their defensive error paved way for Samson Lawal to put Nigeria in the lead 2- 1 with a perfect finish in the 68th minute.

Ladan Bosso tutored side remained resolute for the remaining period of the game which ensured maximum points at stake for Nigeria.

Italy and Brazil are the other teams in Group B, but they are yet to play at then time of filing this report.
