Why Are Some Nigerian Goalkeepers Struggling At Club Level ?

    Francis Uzoho and Maduka Okoye not having enough playing time in Europe at their respective clubs

    By David Doherty

    This is certainly not the best time in Europe for Nigerian goalkeepers. Super Eagles goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho is not a starter in Cyprus League.

    Maduka Okoye currently on the bench at Watford but has managed to appear in one cup game for Watford.

    Sebastian Osigwe was in goal yesterday in their 0- 4 win away from home, however he’s in and out of the starting line up as well.

    The question now is ;
    Time for us to start looking at engaging other youngsters playing week in week out at club level in Europe and Also from our local league on Merit?

    Goalkeepers like Arthur Okonkwo of Crewe Alexander on loan from Arsenal, and Joshua Oluwayemi at Portsmouth ?

    We have to get serious in every compartment of our National teams and ensure we bring in healthy competition with players that are playing week in week out in every area of our team.

    Its unfair to call up goalkeepers or players who are struggling to keep a start even in leagues like Cyprus to Super Eagles, No disrespect to Cyprian league, We can do better.

    We should start introducing young goalkeepers into the squad going forward .
    Jose Paseiro please take note. It is decision call to take.

    Let us do everything on MERIT that is the only way forward for us to progress and plan ahead.
