Rangers International Football Club was too strong for Mekelakeya Fc of Ethiopia as they fell 3-1 at home in Addis Ababa to the Nigerian club giant to make it 5-1 on aggregate having lost the first leg 2-0 in Enugu in the CAF Confederation Cup competition game played last week.
Mekelakeya thought they were on course to cancel the 2-0 deficit when they scored the first goal of the game in the 1st minute through a penalty converted by Minyelu Wendimu to send their fans into great jubilation in expectation of eliminating Rangers.
Rangers shook off their jittery approach to the game and began to find their rhythm which paid off in the 34th minute when Bright Silas equalised to silence the fans of Makelekaya and their woes were compounded when the referee awarded a penalty to Rangers, which was converted by Godwin Aguda in the 39th minute.
Efforts by Mekelakeya to come back into the game proved abortive in the second half and it was Kelvin Itoya that completely nailed the hopes of the Ethiopians when he scored the third goal for the Nigeria FA Cup champions in the 78th minute.
With this victory, Rangers have qualified for the main round of the CAF Confederation Cup Competition.
