WAFU-B U17 Championship: Golden Eaglets Suffer Shock Defeat to Niger

Golden Eaglets of Nigeria

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat to Niger’s U17 team in their Group B encounter at the Stade du 4 Août in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on Wednesday evening.

The game started cautiously, with both teams reluctant to commit too many players forward. The Golden Eaglets had an opportunity to take the lead, but Abuchi Lawrence’s goal-bound effort was cleared by the Nigerien defence.

The Junior Menas gradually grew in confidence and began to dominate proceedings. Their efforts paid off in the 20th minute when Golden Eaglets goalkeeper Mutiu Adenle failed to punch the ball clear, allowing Abdoul Razak Zada to head into the net.

Niger went into the half-time break with a 1-0 lead.

Golden Eaglets head coach Eboboritse Uwejamamore introduced Faruq Azeez for Abuchi Lawrence at the start of the second half in a bid to strengthen his team’s attack.

Azeez’s introduction injected more life into Nigeria’s attacking play down the left flank, but the Nigeriens remained resolute in defence.

As time ticked away, the young Nigerian side continued to push for an equaliser. Coach Eboboritse made further substitutions, with Michael Ekundayo and Fasiu Mubarak replacing Izuchukwu Ogboji and David Fagbamila, respectively.

Ekundayo sought to inject creativity into the midfield, combining with Sochima Emeka and Israel Irabor to drive Nigeria forward.

However, the Junior Menas remained difficult to break down.
Nigeria’s hopes suffered another setback in the 87th minute when a through ball from Abdoul Fataou Hanberi found Abdoul Rakilou Sidikou, who fired a low shot past Adenle to double Niger’s lead

The Golden Eaglets managed to pull one goal back in added time through Mubarak, but it proved too little, too late to prevent a disappointing defeat.

Nigeria will now face defending champions Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday in a must-win encounter as they seek to revive their hopes of progressing in the competition.
