The opening ceremony of the maiden edition of the Jude Gbaboyor Football Championship, which kicked off yesterday (11th June) was an epic ceremony robed in pomp and pageantry, as the community of Isaba stood still to welcome a galaxy of visitors to the agrarian countryside.

Setting the tone was the first game of the three week tournament which saw Stop Gap fc of the great Gbaramatu Kingdom locking horns against Isaba United fc in a highly entertaining encounter.

A highly motivated Stop Gap City fc drew the first blood in the 25th minutes of play through their talismanic skipper, Precious Solomon, dotting Jersey number 40.

At the end of the first half of play, scoreline remained at 1-0 in favour of Stop Gap City boys, even as the hosts tried as much as they could to restore parity, but to no avail.

On resumption for the second half, there was change of tactics by both teams to outwit each other, but their efforts couldn’t make the ball find the back of the net. At the end of regulation and extra time, Stop Gap City garnered the three points at stake with the one Nil victory.

Highlights of the first game of the championship was a display of the ijaw cultural dance by the young female locals, whose dance steps electrified the Isaba Grammar School sports ground.

The President and Founder of the Jude Gbaboyor Football Academy, Engr. Jude Akpodubakaye Gbaboyor was to later redeem his earlier pledge by donating twenty thousand Naira (N20,000.00) each to twelve recipients as business starter pack.

The Jude Gbaboyor Football Championship attracts a star prize of One Million Naira, Five Hundred Thousand Naira for the Runners Up and Three Hundred Thousand Naira for the third prize, with other individual monetary awards.
