Japan produced a dramatic late comeback to dethrone defending champions North Korea, winning 4-1 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time in their FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup semi-final, reports www.totorinews.com.
The first half ended goalless, with both sides unable to break the deadlock.
North Korea took the lead in the 52nd minute through Ri Ui Gyong, putting the defending champions in a strong position to reach another final.
However, Japan refused to surrender and piled pressure on their opponents in search of an equaliser.
Their persistence paid off in the 90+4th minute when North Korea’s Sol-Gyong scored an own goal to restore parity and force the encounter into a penalty shootout.
Japan held their nerve from the spot, converting four penalties against North Korea’s one to seal a 4-1 victory and book their place in the final.
The victory ends North Korea’s title defence and sets up a final showdown against either Nigeria’s Flamingos or Brazil.
