At a time when funding of sport is a big challenge in Nigeria, Senator Shehu Sani has pointed the way forward to the government on how well the sector can be supported in the country, reports www.totorinews.com.
He said that one of the ways government can show seriousness in the development of sport in the country is through waivers for companies that wants to invest in that sector of the Nigerian economy.
Speaking further, he lamented the scandalous and fraudulent N17tr waivers that was lost in the past five years, of which none of the money was waived for sport.
He affirmed that sport is as important as oil. It is also as important as tourism, unfortunately the reverse is the case in Nigeria.
“We don’t just want to do what is right. Sport is as important as oil. Sport is as important as tourism. Why should a country like Jamaica go to the Olympics and coming back with six, seven gold medals and Nigeria will be battling for one bronze medal,” Senator Shehu Sani said.
“There should be some waivers for companies that want to invest in Sports. In five years of Nigeria’s history N17tn was lost to waivers.
“Look at this Abuja national stadium, it was also part of the fraud from waivers. None of the money was waived for Sports.
“Sports men and women are very important in terms of revamping the nation’s image and bring in good investments to Nigeria.
“I believe Nigeria government should be able to support Sports in this regard,” he added.
