Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has deployed new strategy to uncover those behind the violence witnessed in the state on Monday, as he has established a judicial commission of inquiry.
This was necessitated after Ikwere and Emohua Local Government councils secretariats were set ablaze by agents of destruction, which led to loss of life and destruction of properties.
It has been alleged that the display of thuggery and the violence that followed it was perpetuated by societal miscreants loyal to the former Governor of the state, Nyesom Wike, due to the battle of who controls Rivers State between Wike and Fubara.
The violent attacks resulted in the destruction of three local government secretariats in the state.
The days of criminal elements misbehaving and going free with their despicable acts seems to be over as Fubara has vowed to apply the full weight of the law in the matter.
“We won’t stand by and watch political thugs wreak havoc in Rivers State,” Fubara fumed.
“Those behind these attacks will account for their atrocities,” Fubara added while swearing in four new commissioners at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
He continued: “I said it before it happened. Those behind this are unhappy and have gone to extreme lengths to sow discord among our people.
“But we won’t allow this to go unpunished. We will work with security agencies to uncover those responsible and ensure they face justice.”
In a related development, a statement by the Office of the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo on Tuesday, said the judicial commission, is established pursuant to Section 2(1) of the Commissions of Inquiry Law to investigate the arson, killings, and destruction of property at local government council headquarters.
The commission members include:
– Hon. Justice I.R. Minakiri – Chairman
– Barr. Felicia Nwoke – Member
– Prof. Blessing Didia – Member
– Sir Samuel Egbe – Member
– Venerable Alex Usifor – Member
– Barr. Uzor Ikenga – Counsel to the Commission
– Mrs. Inyingi Brown – Secretary
The members of the Commission were sworn-in at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt.
…Disrespect For Court Judgement, Invitation to Violence, Wike Tells Fubara
Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has accused Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, of defying a court judgment.
Wike made this statement during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday evening.
He affirmed that disregarding court rulings could lead to chaos and total breakdown of law and order.
“I was a governor, I have always obeyed the rule of law. You heard the governor say that our state is turning into a state of anarchy where people do not obey the rule of law.
“You must obey the judgement of the court. You must not take the law into your own hands. The moment you don’t obey court judgment, you are inviting anarchy, you are inviting violence,” Wike said.
Wike further accused Fubara of publicly declaring on national television that he would not comply with a court judgment.
The minister also criticised his successor for his comments regarding the police providing security for the local government election in the state.
All these are acts that can make the state to experience political crisis, he noted.
