Whoever threw the gates open before the start of the Nigeria /Ghana match misfired.
The Stadium wasn’t empty, people bought tickets and filled up the stadium to capacity, throwing the gates open gave room for miscreants, drug infected heads and irresponsible bonzos to access the stadium and the result is what happened after the match.
The irony of it all was that the fans who initially ran into the pitch didn’t do so immediately after the match.
They had a hero in one who beat the security chain to meet Ahmed Musa, hugged him and thereafter waved to the fans in celebration of a mission accomplished. He got a roaring response from the fans.
Others took a cue, but were not violent nor destructive, it was when the police started using tear gas, misreading the mood of the fans that the demonic and destructive ones took over.
Many of these fans ran into the pitch lying down on the turf, diving and catching imaginary balls like goalkeepers, it was all in the euphoria of stepping unto the same grass where their idols just finished playing and having fun.

Better crowd management and security network could hav averted the later scenes where fans probably became angry with the police for tear gassing them despite the fact that they meant no harm.
We were in the stadium for more than 50 minutes after the match, there was nothing like violent conduct from the crowd.
The security got their drills wrong.
