As Nigerians celebrate the new year, member representing ONNA State Constituency, Rt Hon. Nse Essien has ‘set free’ 12 Inmates at the Uyo Correctional Center who couldn’t meet up with their bail conditions due to lack of funds.
The FC ONE Rocket football club boss extended his kind gesture to the Inmates, Saturday, 31st December when he paid a visit to the center.
‘Indo’, as he is called by friends and supporters, while acknowledging the sacrifices of the workers, said that it is an act he has been involved in for the past 7 years as House Member, urging the Inmates not to see their current conditions as the end of the world, but should rather learn lessons, get reform and be better citizens and ambassadors of Nigeria when out of the center.
“Correctional center is a place for reformation and you don’t have to see it as the end of the world, rather an avenue to amend your ways, learn some critical lessons and be better members of the society,” Hon. Essien said.
“I must appreciate the staff members of the center for the professional conduct and I pray God to bless them for their sacrifices to humanity. You must be obedient to constituted authority, pray hard and become good members of the society in future.
“I have been celebrating this day with inmates and so far in the past 7 years, I have paid for 177 Inmates to regain their freedom, and today, I’m adding another 12 after making payment of 1.5millon naira, making it a total of 189 Inmates.
“It gives me joy to have been sponsoring this football event here for 8 yrs now and I hope to continue to put smiles on the less privileged by God’s grace, amen,” he added.
Earlier on, the Assistant Comptroller of Correction, ACC Ebereonwu Julius Ogueru lauded the contributions of the Parliamentarian for being a compassionate father and friend, noting that his contributions to the center cannot be underestimated.
The two term House of Assembly member who performed the official final kick-off between ‘Chelsea’ and ‘Manchester United’ at the center, later donated brand new Trophies to winners with cash prize of 50,000 naira for winners, 30,000 for runners up and 20,000 for third place finish.
He also presented cash and medal rewards to the top scorers, referees, best goalkeeper and most valuable player.
