Golden Eaglets, Derby Academy entertain in score-draw friendly in Abuja

Golden Eaglets before the draw with Derby Academy

Football fans at the Sunrise Football Pitch in Abuja were treated to a thrilling friendly encounter between the Golden Eaglets of Nigeria and Derby Academy, which ended in a 1-1 draw on Friday.

Derby Academy, playing at their home ground in Abuja, dominated the early proceedings, dictating the pace as they searched for an opening goal. However, the Golden Eaglets’ defence remained resolute, thwarting their attacking efforts.

The five-time world champions gradually stamped their authority on the game as they began to control the midfield with fluid passing and quick transitions from midfield to attack. Their approach unsettled the Derby Academy defence, though the first half ended goalless.

Both teams continued from where they stopped after the break, producing end-to-end attacking football in search of the opening goal. The breakthrough eventually came on the hour mark when a Derby Academy attacker was brought down inside the box, prompting the referee to point to the spot. The resulting penalty was calmly converted to give the home side the lead.

The goal spurred the Golden Eaglets into action as they piled pressure on the Derby Academy defence in search of an equaliser. Their efforts paid off seven minutes later when they restored parity. Both sides continued to push for a winning goal, but the efforts proved fruitless as the game ended 1-1 after an entertaining encounter.

The Eaglets are preparing for the WAFU B U17 Championship, which begins in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on Saturday, 10th October. Nigeria will compete in Group B alongside Côte d’Ivoire and Niger Republic. The Golden Eaglets will play their first game of the tournament on 14th October.
