Drink waters out of your own cistern [of a pure marriage relationship], and fresh running waters out of your own well. [Confine yourself to your own wife] let your children be for you alone, and not the children of strangers with you. Let your fountain [of human life] be blessed [with the rewards of fidelity], and rejoice in the wife of your youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant doe [tender, gentle, attractive]–let her bosom satisfy you at all times, and always be transported with delight in her love. Why should you, my son, be infatuated with a loose woman, embrace the bosom of an outsider, and go astray? For the ways of man are directly before the eyes of the Lord, and He [Who would have us live soberly, chastely, and godly] carefully weighs all man’s goings. This morning we shall focus on verse 15 which has a clear statement to men. Water is life the sages tell us and quite frankly I have not pastored a large church but have ministered to people within communities and have emphasized ministering based on practical theological stance. So the word here from the original king James reads as follows… Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.

The word water here has two forms. The first is mayim
water, waters
water
water of the feet, urine
of danger, violence, transitory things, refreshment (figuratively)
The second is nâzal
to flow, distil, flow forth or down, trickle, drop
(Qal)
to flow
streams, floods (participle)
to distil
(Hiphil) to cause to flow
That means a deeper message is sent out to you and I. The Bible describes a woman as a cistern a well and tells men to drink water from only their own well.

So when you go after one well after another you do not enter that state of rest called Rehoboth and this leaves you facing a massive problem for the rest of your life. When you see a broken system it means something is wrong with the waters of that well. Remember the experience of Moses and the bitter waters? When God gives you a wife she is like a fresh running cistern. So men go out tasting different kinds of water yet keep their wives and usually do not want any of their excesses to reach the hearing of their spouse.

I discovered that every time I broke ranks I never truly ever got satisfied… As one who is a broken cistern and was heavily tied to pornography I discovered that the only high one truly enjoyed was that first high of the dopermine released and that is another story entirely. So a man will go out and sow his wild oats but only truly gets sound satisfaction from his spouse.

I noticed men tend to get irritated with women they have slept with when they have other distractions and issues on their minds. Mama calls it the chop and clean mouth syndrome. Most men can’t pretend about their relating with the opposite sex. Women because of their dignity are more careful with sexual impropriety and can hide better than a man can take it or leave it. Now men are designed to conquer and thus love to claim ownership of a lady. But let me break this mold. Proverbs 31 describes a certain quality of wife and that quality reminds me about lions and lionesses.

You see during mating season male lions fight a lot to win and mark off a territory as owner of the lioness you know. It is a type of culling as God ordained in lions so they do not have weak species by strong species as only the strong get to mate the lioness thus keeping a strong type of family setting. So to that man sowing your oats every where you are only weakening the species God designed. As long as a man keeps breaking the wells he meets he won’t be satisfied and would only keep wanting more. You soon get to the point you soul is seared and loose yourself in the process so stick to your own well.

Now your well needs maintainance to keep that well flowing sweetly as the key verse today suggests. So men who lack discipline keep chasing the proverbial satisfaction and never find it. Again men are territorial and like the lion mark their territory. So a man will sleep with a lady but be very jealous of another man giving her attention. When God cursed the earth due to Adam and Eve sin it left women desiring the man. So a woman will never sleep with a man except she loves that man. Men on the corollary do not need attachment to have sex and will drink water from cisterns without care not realizing that the quality of man diminishes by this act. A man knows when his partner loves another and vice versa but while women are patient men would scheme and plot to destroy that object of attraction that holds their spouse spell bound. So Proverbs warns us that we drink only from our legitimate spring. In so doing it remains fresh and sweet. Why should you, my son, be infatuated with a loose woman, embrace the bosom of an outsider, and go astray?
