EXCLUSIVE : UEFA Pro Licenced Coach Reveals 5 Steps Nigeria Must Take To Qualify For 2026 World Cup

Having missed out at the recently concluded Qatar 2022 World Cup, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are capable of qualifying for the 2026 football mundial was the candid verdict of UEFA professional licenced coach, Donald Malomo – Paris, reports www.totorinews.com.

Malomo – Paris, Nigerian football tactician with over 24 years coaching experience in Northern Ireland, United Kingdow affirmed that the Super Eagles players are bundled of talents to watch and they have the qualities to step unto the big stage of World football again, but certain steps must be taken for this to come to reality.

With Morocco having  raised the African very high in Qatar before losing 2-0 to France at the semi -finals, Malomo – Paris believes that Nigeria can also have similar achievement, so long that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), follow due process of planning and proper organisation.

“I see the Super Eagles qualifying for the next World Cup in 2026, but the following steps should be taken for us to achieve that, the number one thing that the NFF must ensure that the coach adhere strictly to, is that players must be invited on current form and on merit to the national team,” Malomo – Paris told www.totorinews.com exclusively.

“That is the number one foundation for success. Any player who is confined to the bench at his club should never get invitation to the national team, whether it is for friendly or competitive games,  and the most important thing is never to compromise your starting 11 and the bench. The coach must never compromise in any way. Football is performance based.

“The second step we really need to think about for 2026 is how can we blend the players in the Super Eagles because we need young players and if you look at the spine of our team at the moment,  i can name three players Victor Osimhen, Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey.

“If you look at these three as a spine they are in their 20’s and four years time Osimhen is going to be 27 years. Iwobi is 26 at the moment and in four years time he is going to be 30 years. Bassey is 22 and  in four years time is going to be 26. So, where will the new set of players be coming from.

“We need to start looking at the Flying Eagles now and in four years time they will be quick, fit and ready to go.

The third step which i think is very important is, we have to play friendly games in North America. So, we have to rehearse what is going to happen in 2026. In terms of travelling, recovering of all the players. So, for instance we should play friendly games against Mexico and fly to Canada within the FIFA window.

“For instance, Nigeria plays Mexico in a friendly game on Thursday and fly immediately after the game to Canada for another game on Monday during the international break.

Super Eagles can also play another South American team and then fly to the eastern coast of the U.S. to play another friendly game all within the FIFA International break in a space of three of four days.

“So we begin to understand what it takes to get players to travel within those axis,  compared to Qatar where everything was closely knitted. You know the stadiums were close to one another, they did not need much travel time and all that.

“The fourth step is, we have to improve the domestic league. Our league has suffered for a very long time. We need better facilities, better organizations and better officiating. The league should always start in August and finish in April, what  that means is that it will give time for players’ recovery.

“Also, when the season finishes in April, it gives time for the coaches to go and get educated. There should be a time where you need to get all the coaching courses especially in Europe so we need our coaches to come to European countries and get trained or simply come for refresher courses.

“The fifth step that we have to do is that we have to get supporters behind the Super Eagles and that is very important. Strong support base will enhance the  performance of the Super Eagles. With the population of Nigeria, I think we should be able to galvanise support for the Super Eagles at any part of the world that team will play.

If we can implement these steps, it will be better for our football. We all know that we have talents, what we lack is the organisation and the high standard of organisation and facilities.

“So, with all these things in place, the Super Eagles will qualify for the 2026 World Cup and can equal the feat of Morocco or any other African teams like Senegal, Cameroon, Tunisia and Ghana,” he concluded.
