It has become very obvious that set pieces from corner kicks and free kicks are of the problems militating against the progress of African teams in major football international tournaments, admits the technical study group at the Alexandria stadium,Egypt at the on-going AFCON 2019 tournament, totorinews reports exclusively.

Abraham Nabaratu, a member of the AFCON technical study group revealed that African football has improved over the years, but African teams have not been able to tackle successfully the problem of set pieces in games, which most times had been been responsible for the failure of the teams.

“We know that African teams have improved a lot in AFCON. But i must admit that defensive frailties of African teams have been exposed most times during set pieces. Corner kicks, free kicks are always causing problems for African teams and it has been noted in this tournament.” Nabaratu said.

“African teams are always exciting going forward attacking their opponents and this is very good. Although the final execution of the onslaught in the attack has not complemented the efforts on goal,” he added.

The on-going AFCON tournament has witnessed goals scored from set pieces. Nigeria scored her lone goal against Guinea from a corner kick, while Madagascar buried the ambition of Burundi with a well taken free kick.
