Exclusive : Not a shame to lose to Madagascar – Rohr

Francis Achi, Alexandria, Egypt

Having tinkered the Super Eagles of Nigeria to lose 2-0 to Madagascar, Gernot Rohr, the gaffer of the Super Eagles has justified that it is not a shame to lose to the team making her debut in AFCON tournament.

Rohr said that it was unfortunate that Nigeria lost the game but admitted that their opponents deserved their win, adding that he had to use some players that did not feature in the previous game against Guinea due to the fact Nigeria had already qualified for the next round and winning the round 16 knockout stage is more important.

“We made a mistake that gave Madagascar the first goal and we also conceeded the second goal from a free kick. We lost to a better side. Madagascar qualified for this tournament since October last year amd there is no shame to lose to Madagascar.” Rohr told totorinews.com after the game.

“We wanted to rest some of the players for the round 16. Nigeria had qualified. We are not happy that we lost and it is very important not to lose the round 16 game.

The loss made Nigeria to lose the top spot in the group to Madagascar, a team rated 108th in the world by FIFA. Nigeria finished second and likely to meet a team that also finished second in Group F and Ghana may just be the team, depending how the permutations turn out at the end of first round games in AFCON 2019.
