The Katsina State Ministry of Internal Security announced the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly passed away from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while in captivity alongside his wife.
Throughout his military career, Major General Rabe Abubakar served with honour, professionalism, and dedication. He became widely known as the face and voice of the Armed Forces during his tenure as Director of Defence Information, where he played a key role in military communications and public affairs. His decades of service earned him the respect of colleagues, subordinates, and the wider security community.
Exactly two weeks ago, while travelling to Katsina State with his wife for a wedding ceremony, the retired General was abducted by armed bandits along the Matazu axis of Katsina State. His driver escaped despite sustaining gunshot injuries, but the General and his wife were taken into captivity.

Despite sustained efforts by security agencies and the Katsina State Government to secure their freedom, tragedy struck after news emerged that Major General Rabe Abubakar had died in captivity, bringing a heartbreaking end to the ordeal.
His death is a painful reminder that even those who dedicated their lives to defending the nation are not immune to the insecurity confronting the country today.
A recently circulated video showed the retired army officer nursing a wound on his left foot while in captivity.
Reports indicate that the mastermind of the abduction had demanded the release of three members of his gang, as well as some cattle, as conditions for the couple’s freedom.
