Australian Writer Exposes Extortion Culture At Nigerian Airports

A writer from Australia living in the US has accused Nigerian airport and road security personnel of consistently requesting cash during his visit
Mark Pollard, an Australian author residing in the United States, has voiced his concerns about the security measures in Nigeria, labeling them as excessive and nearly extortionate in a YouTube video.
He shared his experiences navigating Nigerian airports and roads, stating that he was frequently solicited for cash at various checkpoints.
“Nigerian friends, is your whole country designed to extort money from people? Because while traveling in and out of the airports, I was asked for cash at least ten times,” he remarked.
Pollard also raised doubts about the numerous security checkpoints on Nigerian roads, questioning whether they serve a genuine security purpose or are merely for extortion.
“Many roads have security checkpoints, but are they really for security or just shakedown points?” he inquired.
He noted that even when he arrived at his hotel, the staff seemed more focused on finding ways to extract money from him rather than ensuring his safety.
“Even when entering my hotel, people weren’t just checking to see if I was carrying anything dangerous; they were sizing me up to see if there was anything they could ask me for,” he explained.
“Am I overreacting? Because this must be a daily source of stress for you,” he reflected on the difficulties he witnessed during his stay.
Despite his criticisms, Pollard acknowledged Nigeria’s strengths in other areas, especially fashion.
“I was just visiting and had a great time. I would say Nigeria is number one in fashion in Africa,” he concluded.
