Flamingos to Face Mexico in Round of 16 at U-17 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, will face Mexico in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Thursday, October 29.

The Flamingos booked their place in the knockout stage after an impressive 3-1 victory over defending champions Korea DPR, finishing second in Group B with six points.

Nigeria had opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland but bounced back with a 2-0 win over Puerto Rico before producing their memorable performance against the defending champions.

Mexico also advanced after finishing second in Group F with six points. They recovered from a 2-0 loss to Spain with a 3-1 victory over Chile before defeating Australia 1-0 in their final group match, with captain Citlalli Reyes scoring the decisive goal.

The encounter will offer coach Akeem Busari’s side an opportunity to build on their impressive finish to the group stage and secure a place in the quarter-finals.

The Flamingos will need to maintain the attacking confidence they displayed against Korea DPR while remaining defensively disciplined against a Mexican side that has won its last two group matches.

Nigeria finished third at the 2022 edition in India, their best performance at the tournament, and will be eager to progress further in Morocco.

The Round of 16 match is scheduled for Thursday, October 29, at the Women’s Football Complex in Morocco, with kick-off at 3 p.m. local time.
