The world of athletics will remember this name – Julien Alfred for many decades, the newlg crowned women’s 100metres Olympic champion, www.totorinews.com reports.

What a shocking result! She relegated Sha’carri Richardson in the semi, though you could imagine at that stage that Richardson might have been holding back her vibe for the final race.

However this time, there was no scent of that. Alfred bursted out of the blocks like a bullet and she outran every competitor. She strided the field the entire way and there was no stopping her, not even Richardson’s closing late rally effort could hold her back.

With light rain falling on Stade de France’s purple track, Alfred became the world’s fastest woman when she claimed gold in the 100 metres in 10.72s, ahead of the woman from the biggest track and field country in the world, Sha’Carri Richardson in 10.87s. Fellow American Melissa Jefferson was third in 10.92s.

“It sounds really good, it has a good ring to it,” she said of being the new Olympic champion.

“Usain Bolt won so many medals. I went back this morning and watched his races. I’m not going to lie, it was all Usain Bolt’s races this morning.

St Lucia, where Alfred is from, is a small volcanic island of barely more than 180,000 people, off the north-west coast of Barbados in the east Caribbean.

Alfred, who has been racing in the US college system, choked up thinking of what this moment meant for her country.
