The 2023 Varriego Cup may have come and gone, but the exploits of Mavlon FC remains one of the talking points of the tournament held in Italy.

Mavlon FC, the modest club in the 3rd tier league in Nigeria displayed fluid flowing football to the admiration of the fans that watched the tournament.

Prior to their first game of the tournament, the Italian world cup winning cup, the legendary Marcello Lippi was the August vistor at the training ground of Mavlon in Italy.

It was a visit that really motivated the young Nigerians. Although, most of the players are too young to know what Lippi represents in world football, but when they flashed back to the time they watched all the matches of Germany 2006 World Cup, it dawned on them that they were before the man that won the 4th title for Italy. The players were simply in awe of Lippi.

Perhaps the visit of Lippi was a motivating tonic the players and officials needed to kick start their campaign at Varriego Cup 2023 and they did it in great style.

A team parading highly gifted young Nigerian footballers were the cynosure of all eyes due to their rich football on display and it not out of place to expect good football from Mavlon FC, if you have been following the progress of the team from Nigeria.

Jovenes Promesas got the shock of their lives when they were beaten mercilessly by Mavlon FC 3-0 in the first game in their group. Mavlon FC went on goalscoring rampage with Isaiah Omale scoring a brace and Friday Ejeh converting from the spot to seal the victory.

It was not just the scoreline of 3-0, but the total dominance of the game by Mavlon FC, the quick transition from defence to attack, a total demonstration of a team with strong cohesion, that got the tongues in Italy rolling with admiration of the Nigerian side.

However, it was a different atmosphere in the dressing room of Mavlon FC after they tasted the same 3-0 defeat against Bologna U- 19. It was indeed a shocking.

Atromitos U-19 were very woeful against Mavlon Fc as they were pummelled 3-0, which ensured qualification to the Round 16 for the gladiators from Nigeria.

One of the round 16 cracker was between Mavlon FC and Honved U-19. It was a very tight knitted game, both teams looked balance, but the last ambassadors standing lost narrowly 2-1 to painfully exit the tournament.

Despite crashing of the 2023 Varriego Cup, some talented Mavlon FC players were the rave of the moment among the European scouts that graced the tournament.

Charles Agada, Nigerian teenage striker of Mavlon FC announced to the organisers, scouts, agents and other representatives of European clubs that he is one of the young talents that the world of football must watch out for in the coming years.

He was a torn in the flesh for most of the defenders in the tournament.

Another bright spot in Mavlon FC was the sleeky and skillful Israel Ayuma, a midfielder with pure class in his ball distribution and quality attacking minded football.

Little wonder that the 18 years old is already in the book of Istra 1961 FC of Croatia, where he has continued to develop his game.

Friday James Samuel, the safe hands in goal for Mavlon FC was very marvellous for Mavlon FC and his prowess is not being appreciated by Charlton Athletic of England, where he will join the team when he clocks 18 years.

These are just some of the players from Mavlon FC that their exploits at the 2023 Varriego Cup added value to the football.

As the world looks forward to Varriego Cup in 2024, it is hoped that Mavlon FC will continue to raise the standard of the tournament with the next set of dynamic young Nigerian players that will be on parade for the club.
