Ighodaro, Nigerian lethal striker setting South Africa ablaze with goals

Defenders' nightmare...Etionosa Ighodaro in action for his club, SuperSport United in the PSL

    By Ikenwa Nnabuogor

A brand new song in South Africa threatening to burst the charts and receiving very little “play time” in the home front, and could go platinum any time soon in the world scene and the new song is none other than Etinosa Ighodaro, 22 years old Benin-born striker leading the charge in the attack for South African top side, Supersport United.

His God-given power, fantastically true to his name Godspower, has fired his power bank the way up to the top of the South African football pyramid inviting the multiple time champions Supersport United to break the Nedbank to have the him on their roster for the new season

Previously unknown, Etinosa has consistently powered his way to the top and continued to thread on the petals laid on his path to hit stardom and he’s doing that with so much gusto. Perhaps, South Africa will be too small sooner rather than later for him judging his superlative performance since he arrived the Rainbow Nation three years ago.

Super agent Mohammed Lawal came back home again with his bionic eyes to fish for talents to ferry to the Nelson Mandela’s country and Etinosa’s feet were delightful caught in Lawal’s booby trap and the rest is history and of course, the sweet tale of what is currently told of the youngster.

Mo had been associated with Nigerian players since he made South Africa his home away from his native Kaduna home and knew he wasn’t wrong with Etinosa and today, his career is on the upward curve.

“Parked” briefly at champions Mamelodi Sundowns on arrival from Nigeria but the Pretoria-based champions were not ready to take a gamble on their new rookie but it was the gains of lowly side University of Pretoria that gladly opened their arms for the promising youngster.

FC Amatuks welcomed him with bouquets as a fresh prince and by the time he was leaving, princely sum had changed hands between Amatuks and Chippa United who welcomed Etinosa a happier prince.

His goals were constant, hard earned, consistent and Chippa United who had also fought and won yet another survival battle relied on Etinosa’s 10 goals to help them stay afloat again. But they were going to lose him after all but we’re happier with the bank balances as Etinosa headed back to Pretoria where his South Africa story began.

He was only playing top flight football for the first time since he arrived South Africa and led an attack that had been under pressure to pull off yet another survival. His tenacity, power and resilience and a few bag of tricks were enough to have him do what Napoleon Bonaparte could not do. Chippa United survived again but didn’t stop bigger side Supersport United from snapping him.

Rubbing it in once again, Chippa were going to lose all afterwards, the fee was irresistible and swollen their bank balances got as Etinosa left Port Elizabeth and headed to Pretoria, his “hometown” for a slice of big-team football.

Chippa were indeed ambitious and has a great eye for talent to price him away from FC Amatuks and Etinosa has lived every bit of that promise.

He’s refused to waste time to get on the groove at his new side, netting on his debut and looking good to stay goal-happy to lead the Matsatsantsa attack to sniff at the league title since 2009-2010 season they won it last.

Etinosa remains unsong back home but his immense talent cannot be wished away, strong, skilful and a coach’s delight.

Catching the Eagles handlers’ eye may not happen now but it won’t take long before it does and of course, that would be when he takes his trade to Europe to continue his sweet goal scoring game.

But before then the bragging rights and presidential approval are in the bag for the youngster to fire Supersport United to another league title.
