Deputy President William Ruto has won Kenya’s presidential election, the electoral commission chairman has said, www.totorinews.com.
He narrowly beat his rival, Raila Odinga, taking 50.4% of the vote.
According to the BBC, the presidential election result was announced amid dramatic scenes.
The announcement was delayed amid scuffles and allegations of vote-rigging by Odinga’s campaign.
The BBC reported that four of the seven members of the electoral commission refused to endorse the announcement, saying the results were not real.
“We cannot take ownership of the result that is going to be announced because of the opaque nature of this last phase of the general election,” Juliana Cherera, the vice-chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), had told the BBC.
Throughout the campaign; the 55-year-old was clad in bright yellow attires of his United Democratic Alliance, whose symbol is the humble wheelbarrow. Ruto relentlessly reached out to those suffering most from the Covid-induced cost of living crisis.
When he unveiled his manifesto, he dedicated it to the hustlers- those ” at the bottom of the pyramid “. He has pledged to bring them “durable growth”, while maintaining macroeconomic stability.
“He has made the way. God is great. Thank you hustlers, we are your servants.” Ruto, the president – elect of Kenya tweeted.
