Anthony Ohikhuaeme Omoijuanfo is a Norwegian footballer who plays for Brondby in Denmark. “OHI” as he’s fondly called has played for the U16, U17,U19,U20 and U21 youth team of Norway.
The Norwaygian born Nigeria attacker Omoijuanfo scored the winning goal for Norway senior team in their friendly Ireland yesterday.
He progressed from the age – grade teams of Norway to play for their senior national team.
If he hadn’t make it to the senior national team of Norway, some football agents will seek for ways for him to play for Nigeria.
A player born and bred in Norway, who may not really understand the culture and philosophy of Nigeria or African football, how will he fit in?
The truth is this, most players born and bred abroad never reckoned to play for Nigeria from the onset. It is when they found out they were not good enough for the country of of birth that they think of Nigeria as their root.
Football loving Nigerians will always welcome the foreign – born Nigerian players from any part of the world who merit to play for the Super Eagles, but the feeble ones, without the quality of wearing the national colours of Nigeria should be shown the exit door.
The real test of these players is when they play for Nigeria during the African qualifiers and they bring their A – game to the pitch, that is when they can fully convinced Nigerians that indeed they deserve to wear the Super Eagles shirt.
Nigerians want to see how these players will react to the hostile crowd in Congo DR, Congo Brazzaville, Egypt, Tinusia, South Africa, Cameroon etc and still perform creditably well in the midst of harsh realities of African football.
I have watched Ebere Eze severally, he is a pure natural midfielder, a fantastic playmaker, but will he be able to adapt quickly to Nigerian football if he decides to switch allegiance from England to Nigeria?
Bright Osayi Samuel had a good debut game for the Super Eagles against Portugal, he even won the team a penalty, sadly wasted by Emmnanuel Dennis.
The defender was born in Nigeria, but he grew up in England where he nurtured his game. Something tells me that he may be given a long script in the Super Eagles to act a major role in our defence due to the high quality of his play.
Ohi is doing well for Norway. He never thought of playing for Nigeria from cradle and so be it.
Congrats for representing the good people of Edo State, Nigeria in far away Norway.
Nigerians are proud of you.
