Super Eagles claw Elephants in a cagey game

Williams Troost-Ekong was indeed captain fantastic for the Super Eagles after slamming the winning goal from the penalty spot in the 55th minute.

After playing a score draw with the Equatorial Guinea in the opening game in Group A, the Super Eagles were under pressure not to lose to the Elephants of Ivory Coast, the host of AFCON, who had earlier defeated Guinea-Bissau in the opening game of the tournament. 

Super Eagles set out in a 3-4-3 formation to check mate the attacking forays of the Elephants which proved effective and as the game progressed, it was Victor Osimhen that would have put Nigeria ahead in the 8th minute after he received a pass from Ademola Lookman, but he hit the ball over the bar.

Williams Troost-Ekong hits the penalty into the net

It was a game of limited goalscoring opportunities as both teams went into the break in a stalemate.

However, the tide favoured Nigeria in the second half when VAR judged that Osimhen was infringed upon in the box.

Troost-Ekong stepped in to take the resultant penalty kick, whic was perfectly struck into the net to give Nigeria the lead.

It was all Nigeria needed to cement the three points as the trio of Troost-Ekong, Aina and Calvin Ughelumba were very resolute in the defence, thwarting every attacking efforts of the Ivoriend till the end of the 90minutes.
