NCF Women’s T20i: Nigeria leads group with another victory

By Akanimo Kufre

In a Match Day, 2 encounters at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), the Nigerian women’s cricket team defeated their valiant Cameroonian neighbours by 7 wickets to bag a second victory.

After winning the toss, the Cameroonian decided to bat first. Madeleine Laura and Michele Solange, were opening batters who proved to be a tough nut for Nigerian bowlers to crack. Following the breakdown of their partnership, succeeding batters were easily dispatched by the Nigerian bowlers thereby reducing their scoring chances. Cameroon scored only 58 runs and was bowled all out in 20 overs.

The Nigerian ladies’ second inning appeared to be a stroll in the park, but openers Favour Eseigbe and Esther Sandy lost their wickets far too early. They were both dismissed though caught out, apparently due to poor shot selection.

Nevertheless, Agatha Uadaile and Salome Sunday came to the party with a spectacular performance. Both players batted with the same strike rate of 100. For the duo, every ball the Cameroonians offered was converted to keep the tally ticking and they stayed in their crease till victory was certain. Nigeria made 60 runs in 7.4 overs, recording an impressive 7.83 runs rate compared to Cameroon’s 2.90 runs rate.

Despite Salome Sunday’s sterling batting display, her compatriot Favour Eseigbe won the Player of the Match award for dismissing 3 opponents’ wickets.

The second match of the day was between Ghanaian girls and Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone female patriots won by 7 wickets, 67/10 and 68/3 respectively.

Sierra Leones Alice Fillie became MVP after making 3 dismissals.
