Fifth seed Tommy Paul is another casualty on the court at Japan Open after the American was beaten 2-6, 6-3, 7-6, (7-4) by Tomas Machac in the second round clash on Saturday, reports www.totorinews.com.
Japan Open is gradually turning to a tournament of upsets as some top seed Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud third seed and fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas and Frances Tiafoe, the seventh seed all crumbled in the first round.
The same fate repeated itself when Hubert Hurkazc, the second seed was sent packing by Britian’s tennis star Jack Draper in the second round.
With the exit of Paul, only two of the eight seeds are still remaining in the tournament in Tokyo.
Paul appeared to be dictating the match against Machac. He won five straight games in the first set, but he allowed his opponent to bounce back into reckoning in the second game, which led to his eventual loss.
Speaking after the thrilling match, Machac said the none- seeded players are equally great.
“Even the not- seeded players here are great. I’m just happy that i’m in and i just try to believe as much as possible,” Machac said.
“I feel great. First set he was better, second set i found my rhythm. In the third set, i was playing unbelievable so i’m super- happy with my performance,” he added.
Another American, Alex Michelsen, who defeated Christopher O’Connell 6-1, 6-4 will be Machac’s quarter-final opponent.
