This was disclosed by Yusuf Alli, the chairman of Edo State Commission while speaking to the media at the Delta 22 national sports festival in Asaba. He said that the state will not deploy resources to buy athletes with the aim of winning plenty gold medals to finish at the top, but will rather concentrate on sports that will empower the youths against hunger and poverty.
“To be honest with you, we are satisfied with the performance of Edo State athletes at this national sports festival. Edo State will not buy athletes because we want to win gold medals,” Yusuf Alli said.
“We have a team, and what we did was first and foremost, let us take sports that will bring food to the table of our kids. Sports like boxing, tennis, basketball, volleyball football and athletics.
“If you are a boxer and you knock somebody down on the ring, they will pay you for that and you will see champions that will come out from boxing and the rest that we focus on. These are the key sports that we took and we will develop in the state.
“Sports like swimming, gymnastics are not left out because these are also sports that will give us medals at the national sports festival of this nature,” he said.
Team Edo is presently at the third position with 28 gold medals, 42 silver medals and 68 bronze medals as the last officially updated table of the festival.
