Football stakeholders in Nigeria travelling by road to support the Super Eagles at the forthcoming AFCON in Ivory Coast in January should prepare to tackle corrupt immigration officials at various borders is the sad  narrative from a Nigerian – Canadian, Amas Gbomo.

Bomoh revealed this to www.totorinews.com in an exclusive interview, where he said that the Lagos – Seme border, Aflao border and the rest boarders leading into Ivory Coast are marred by corrupt Immigration officials extorting money from travellers, and these travellers are from same ECOWAS countries.

He, however commended the government of Ivory Coast for building world class stadia for the AFCON tournament, adding that the Stade Olympique Alassane Quattara where the Super Eagles will play her first game is good to go.

“This is Stade Olympique Alassane Quattara D’ebimpe, in Abidjan and it is good to go, a world class stadium. This is the venue where the Super Eagles will be playing their first match on the 14th of January, but any Nigerian travelling by road to support the Super Eagles should prepare to face the worst at the borders,” Gbomo said.

“I am going to warn everyone who is coming to Ivory Coast. I’m not just talking, but I am talking based on what I encountered at Lagos – Seme border,  Togo, Ghana and Ivory Coast. I’m going to say that Africa, it’s a pity, I’m an African yes proud African,  I’m a Nigerian but my heart breaks to witness messy corrupt acts at our borders.

“There is an ECOWAS passport just like when you have a Shengen passport, if you want to go from Holland to Italy to Belgium you don’t have to pay a dime to any immigration officials. I have an ECOWAS passport but from every border post I got, I paid 4000 Cedis to get my passport stamped.

Ghana-Togo Border in Aflao and I would to show you how it looks. You can saunter from Aflao into the Capital City of Togo, (Lomè).

“These immigration officials at the borders have a stupid thing they called virgin passport because I have not passed the route. These immigration guys in Ghana are corruption defined. I was charged 10000 Ghanaian Cedis to get my passport stamped. I have an ECOWAS passport, I told them what I was coming for.

“So, if you are coming from Nigeria by road which obviously most Nigerians will do because the flight fare is costly, if you are coming by road be ready. I appeal to the Minister of Internal Affairs. I commend him because he is doing a very wonderful job. Nigeria  should do something about these corrupt acts.

“These officials at the Seme border in Nigeria are a disgrace, total disgrace to Nigeria. Even inside Ivory Coast Immigration and Police Officers were harassing us as Nigerians to pay 2000 or 3000 CFA to come into their country because they said Nigeria police men and immigration officers do the same thing to them.

Hon. Minister of Interior, Federal Republic of Nigeria

“It’s heart breaking, please Minister of Internal Affairs do something before the Nations Cup so that, as Nigerians are gathering to come and support the Super Eagles, they are not going to go through the same stress I went through.

“I paid up to N120,000 00 equivalent at the border after paying N70,000.00 from my trip to Ghana that is how much I paid. So, I mean people love soccer but I mean things are tough in Nigeria so if somebody is able to bring out money to come support the Super Eagles the government should do everything to stop those vagabonds at the border, you have a valid paper to get into a country, they tell you, your passport is a virgin, that you have not passed the route before that you are meant to pay 5000, 10000 CFA.

“I am begging everyone from CAF to the governments of Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Benin Republic and Cote d’Ivoire do something about it, they should sanction the immigration vagabonds  because they are a disgrace to Africa.

“It breaks my heart, I met a Chinese man at the border and he was made to pay 30000 Ghanaian Cedia to get his passport stamped even though he had a valid visa, that’s how bad it is.

“The Ghanaian government, the Togolese government, the government of Benin and the Nigerian Government talk to your immigration officers because they are a disgrace to Africa.

“We are hosting the world and see the image we are selling out to the world. It is very sad,” he concluded.

More than five thousand Nigerians fans are expected to travel to Abidjan, Ivory Coast from Nigeria to support the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the AFCON tournament starting on the 13th of January, 2024.
