Kenneth Omeruo leap very high to nod the ball into the net from a corner kick taken by Moses Simon as the Super Eagles defeated the Syli Nationale of Guinea 1-0 to soar into the round 16 of the AFCON tournament in Egypt.
It was Omeruo’s first goal for Nigeria and it came in the 73rd minute of the dicey encounter when it appeared that the game could end goalless after the Super Eagles missed some goals scoring opportunities in the game especially in the first half.
With Williams Troost- Ekong and Mikel Obi missing in the game as Gernot Rohr decided to pair Omeruo and Leon Balogun in the central defence, while Alex Iwobi was the playmaker in the midfield that also comprised of Wilfred Ndidi and Oghenekaro Etebo, but the Syli Nationale proved difficult to break and they even had better possession going into the break.
The second half belonged to the Super Eagles. Omeruo amd Leon completely locked the entrance to the danger zone of Nigeria. Omeruo was very effective , cutting off dangerous moves of the Guineans amd joining the attack of the Super Eagles as they searched for the goal, which eventually came to silence their opponents and ensured the maximum points.
There is no doubt that the Chelsea defender who played on loan with CD Leganes in the La Liga last season deserved the Man of the Match award and it is a thing of joy to see a scoring defender in the Super Eagles.
Nigeria will play her last group game against Madagascar on Sunday.
