Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mexico in their Round of 16 encounter on Thursday, reports www.totorinews.com.
The Nigerian girls delivered another impressive performance to overcome the Mexican side, with goals from Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan sealing their progression to the last eight.
Umejiaku opened the scoring in the 40th minute, giving Nigeria a deserved advantage before the interval.
The Flamingos continued their push after the restart, with Dunstan finding the net to strengthen Nigeria’s grip on the contest.
Mexico fought back and managed to pull a goal back, setting up a tense finish, but Nigeria held firm to secure the victory and book their place in the quarter-finals.
The result represents another major step for head coach Hakeem Busari’s side, who have grown in confidence following their impressive 3-1 victory over defending champions Korea DPR in their final group-stage match.
Nigeria had opened their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland before bouncing back with a 2-0 win over Puerto Rico and the memorable triumph over Korea DPR to reach the knockout stage.
The Flamingos will now turn their attention to the quarter-finals as they continue their quest for the title and aim to improve on their bronze-medal finish at the 2022 edition in India.
