Washington offered new support to Kenya and Nigeria after the African nations reported a handful of new Ebola cases, the US State Department announced, saying Donald Trump’s administration “stands ready” to bolster the response to the outbreak.
The US raised its travel advisory for Kenya to Level 3 earlier this week.
Africa CDC, the continental body coordinating the response to the spread of the virus, warned last week that aid organizations had not reported more than $700 million in donor funding to Congolese authorities.
Its director-general on Thursday told Semafor that $450 million of the funds had now been traced.
The Ebola outbreak comes against the backdrop of the shuttering of USAID and broader Western aid budget cuts. Health experts argue that a lack of resources reduced the presence of health workers on the ground, slowing the response to the outbreak.
